Saskcode continues its mission… Partnering with passionate and adventurous educators we are pursuing our dream of spreading robots to every school, to every classroom, and every student across Saskatchewan. It is true that we love robots, but we also know that students love them as well. Our partner teachers understand that they can introduce robotics and coding to teach multiple subject areas as well as teach creative problem solving, and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) skills.
We have just completed our first round of provincial professional development (PD) and we are eager to work with many more Saskatchewan teachers during our next round of sessions in 2021. In celebration of computer science week in December we are also running a virtual Tinkercad workshop with 22 classrooms. Students in these classrooms will be designing customized keychains which we will 3-D print and send to the students. We can not wait to get those 3-D printers running day and night!
For those that are unfamiliar to the Saskcode program, we provide virtual PD in robotics to teachers from grades K-12. Teachers are mailed a robot prior to the hand’s on session. Teachers within the Saskatoon and Regina area can borrow grade appropriate robotics kits for use in their classroom. School that are outside of our lending area, can purchase robotics kits from us. Our website (saskcode.ca) has curriculum linked activities that teachers can use across a wide spectrum of subjects from dance, to music, to science and math. Once students reach grade 7, they can learn Practical Applied Arts (PAA) using the newly released Saskatchewan Robotics curriculum. This can be a very affordable way to offer PAA in schools. Our lessons and kits have been put together by experienced teachers and we are standing by to answer questions to support your robot adventures.
PD sessions include:
- Robot Mouse (grade K-2)
- Ozobot (Grade 2-3)
- Edison (Grade 5-6)
- Microbit (Grade 5-6) (NEW!)
- Tinkercad (Grade 7-8) (NEW!_
- Arduino (Grade 7-8)
- Arduino robot car (Grade 7-8)
